It’s all around us… and only growing: artificial intelligence.  (And, no, we didn’t use AI to write this article!)

Artificial intelligence has infiltrated the workforce, under many different brands—ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini, to name a few.  Ultimately, AI is not a force to be avoided, feared, nor shunned; rather, it can be used to strengthen your leadership.

Don’t believe us?  Let us briefly discuss the WHAT, WHY, and HOW of leading in the era of AI:

  1. Know WHAT to use it for:  Summarizing all-over-the-place notes, analyzing an assortment of qualitative feedback, or preparing meeting agendas are all perfect, objective tasks to utilize AI for.  However, that difficult, emotionally charged conversation where you need to deliver hard advice might be best handled by showing up as your authentic self.

  2. Know WHY you’re using it: Ask yourself this tough question: Are you using artificial intelligence to AVOID hard things in your life and leadership, or to enhance and simplify your life and leadership?  Examples that fall in the former category should be questioned.

  3. Know HOW AI is impacting your team: Solicit feedback.  Where have you used AI that may not have landed well with your team members?  If you’re using AI for tasks such as coaching someone or analyzing completed work, be open with your team about your strategy.  See where there are gaps, and where they need the real you.

Finally, model the way: There’s inevitable fear around AI—job replacements, lack of emotional connection, and more concerns may cause whispers with AI in the workplace.  However, it isn’t going away. So, instead, lead from a place of confidence.  Know that you can use AI to strengthen your leadership, your team, and your organization.  Create a place of safety for your team to feel the freedom to try to employ useful features into their everyday work.
