A few weeks ago on the blog, we wrote about the 7-38-55 rule. (Read more here!) Essentially, this topic dealt with how much more is important to our communication beyond the words that we say.

Well, this week, we’re expanding that theme to cover even more ground.  If your words are only part of the equation, what can you do to ensure you are an effective communicator in all areas?

Fortunately, we have tangible tips and tricks to help you out.  Here are our top 5:

  • Be present.  This can take a few different meanings: be physically present whenever possible (no more Zoom meetings for critical conversations), be on time, and be locked in as a listener.  Be there to feel the pulse of the emotions of your team.  Be in the moment when you’re speaking.

  • Practice in the mirror.  Does your body language match your tone?  Are you skilled with eye contact?  You may not always know how you come across, so ensure you are aware by taking a hard look in the mirror—literally!

  • Go with your gut.  Hard and fast rules are out the window when it comes to effective communication.  People care more about you showing up as the true, real, vulnerable YOU than putting on a front.  Practice empathy, show openness, and ask real questions.

  • Ditch the phone.  We’re addicted to our smartphones, so much that they often distract from genuine connections.  In meetings, or even water cooler chats, leave your phone behind and give your full attention to the people communicating with you outside of your screen.

  • Pause with purpose. Silence is a tool. Whether you’re presenting to a group or in a one-on-one, intentional pauses can give weight to your words and allow your listener to process your message.
